Best Brake Upgrades for 2017-2021 Honda FK8 Type R
The FK8 Type R ships from the factory with a genuinely capable Brembo setup, so the question isn't whether you need to upgrade — it's what you're asking the brakes to do. Street driving and the odd track day rarely demand more than a quality pad swap and fresh fluid. Sustained lap work is a different story.
Heat soak is the enemy. The FK8's front-heavy weight distribution and sticky tyres load the front axle hard, and stock pads that feel confident on the road will fade noticeably once they've been cycled a few times at temperature. Start with consumables before committing to hardware — a quality race compound from CIRCO or Winmax will transform pedal feel and fade resistance at a fraction of the cost of a big brake kit. Braided lines and a high-temperature fluid like Motul RBF 600 (dry boiling point 312°C) are cheap insurance against a soft pedal mid-session.
If you're running slicks or making serious power, the factory Brembos do start to become the limiting factor. A larger swept area with a multi-piston caliper becomes a genuine gain rather than a cosmetic one.
Worth noting: if you've got high kilometres on your calipers, a seal rebuild kit before fitting new pads is sound practice. Seized pistons wear pads unevenly and hide a real safety issue.
