Best Engine Internals & Accessories for 1992-2000 Subaru GC8 WRX
The EJ20's bottom end handles significant power in stock form, but the ancillaries surrounding it are usually the first things to wear, leak, or cause grief on a high-mileage GC8. Oil pans, sumps, dipsticks, harmonic balancers, breathers, brackets, fittings — the unglamorous stuff that keeps everything where it should be.
Most GC8s are now 25-plus years old. Worn or cracked components in this category aren't just a performance concern, they're a reliability one.
Oil management deserves particular attention on the EJ20. Factory sumps and breather setups weren't designed for sustained hard cornering or track use. Oil starvation under load is a known weak point once you start pushing the car — baffled sumps address this directly and are one of the more practical upgrades before any serious track work.
On the balancer side, the OEM harmonic balancer is a rubber-bonded unit that degrades with age and heat cycles. A failed or out-of-spec balancer puts unnecessary stress on the front of the crank and throws accessory belt alignment out.
If your GC8 is a dedicated track car or a high-kilometre street car being brought back to standard, work through this category before chasing power gains. It'll save you from chasing problems later.
